Ghostbusters (2016): A Review

The new adaptation of Ivan Reitman’s 1984 Ghostbusters film stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in a vibrant revival of the original. The opening scene puts us straight away in the supernatural world of haunted houses and gooey ghosts. McCarthy and Wiig play former best friends Erin and Abby who are reunited in the examination of the metaphysical. McKinnon gives an amazing performance as the quirky Jillian, Abby’s investigative partner. Her intelligent, entertaining character is the brains to Abby’s passion, forming a ghost-busting match made in heaven. For the two forgotten scientists investigating the supernatural at a newly established research institute, all seems to be going to plan when Erin agrees to join their team. However, after the institute realises the pair are researching ghosts, the three are quickly in search of a new premisis.

Thus kicks off the ghostbusters! Once Leslie Jones, a subway worker who witnesses a ghostly appearance on the tracks, joins the group they are quickly delving into ghost-hunting around NYC. The plot is a pleasing mix of the paranormal, action and, of course, comedy. Chris Hemsworth takes the place of clueless receptionist, his character is hapless but entertaining, taking nothing away from the girls. Ghostbusters is a great example of an action/supernatural film that lets women lead the way, doing justice to the original film and demonstrating the natural talent of all the women involved.

A satisfying ending scene full of action, guns, ghosts, and the ever-present jokes which make this film a joy to watch.
